‘Other’ refers to those positioned outside dominant norms of race, gender, sexuality, class, or nationality - marked as different and consequently undervalued or erased by normative power structures. For Wilde, an Iranian-born artist subjected to institutional tokenism, ‘Other’ means existing as simultaneously essential (for diversity optics) and disposable (when politically inconvenient). Her work reframes this position not as deficit but as refusal, a deliberate act of naming interpersonal and structural harm. OTHER Pt.1 (Survival) & Stories of Other, was a four-day exhibition and workshop takeover conceived by East London artist Aida Wilde, staged in collaboration with Nasty Gallery's public programme, & Stories of Other. Presented across International Women's Day weekend, the takeover drew on a lineage of punk and DIY feminist activism, echoing the collective, self-organised print practice of See Red Women's Workshop (1974–1990).
Titled after the experience of being marked 'other' on forms, in institutions, across a career spanning three decades, Wilde's exhibition of over thirty black-and-white textile artefacts sat with the tension of being treated as both essential and disposable. Wilde, an Iranian-born artist who came to the UK as a political refugee, brought that history directly into the work. The show also marked a return to Brick Lane, streets from where Wilde ran her shop BRAG Boutique in the early 2000s.
Nasty Gallery's contribution, & Stories of Other, brought together new work from CW Stubbs, Paige Megan Hawley, Lior Hatt, Boa Swindler, and Apparan, alongside a programme of eco-conscious art-making, life-drawing, and mental health workshops, including a banner-making workshop using fabric remnants from Wilde's own exhibited pieces, and a Sufficiently Radical Posters workshop run with Jordan Taylor of PageMasters. True to Nasty Gallery's ethos, there was always tea and cake on offer.
